An R&B ballad, "You lot Are Not Alone" was written by American singer R. Kelly for Jackson in response to difficult times in his own personal life. The music video, which featured Jackson and his then-wife Lisa Marie Presley, featured scenes of semi-nudity.
"You Are Not Lonely" received generally positive reviews and was the recipient of Grammy and American Music Honor nominations. It holds a Guinness World Record every bit the kickoff vocal to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It also topped the charts in Republic of austria, Belgium, French republic, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Uk. It was re-released in 2006 as function of Jackson's box set up Visionary: The Video Singles, and re-entered at number thirty in the UK Singles Nautical chart.[2]
"You Are Not Lonely" was Jackson's thirteenth and last number-1 US unmarried during his lifetime. After his decease in June 2009, Kelly paid tribute by including a version of the vocal on his anthology Love Alphabetic character (2010). In 2011, a clip of the song was remixed with the Jackson vocal "I Just Tin't Stop Loving You"; the last "Immortal Version" was released on the Immortal album.
Production and composition [edit]
"You Are Not Alone" is a popular and R&B ballad about love and isolation.[three] [4] [five] The song was written past R. Kelly and produced by Kelly and Jackson.[iv] Kelly wrote the vocal subsequently losing close people in his life.[6] Kelly was delighted to be able to work with his idol, explaining "I was psyched ... I feel I could have done his whole anthology. Non being selfish. I was merely that geeked about it. Information technology was an experience out of this world ... It'southward amazing to know that 5 years ago I was writing songs in a basement in the ghetto and now I'1000 writing for Michael Jackson ... I'd exist a fool not to say it's a dream come truthful."[7] Jackson contacted Kelly to run into if he had any textile available. Kelly forwarded a tape recording of the song and Jackson then agreed to work with Kelly on the piece.[seven] On the record sent to Jackson, Kelly sung "You lot Are Non Alone" mimicking Jackson's song style, explaining, "I think I am him. I become him. I want him to feel that as well." Jackson establish the interpretation amusing.[8] They spent the last week of November 1994 together in the studio working on the track.[7]
Jackson explained that he instantly liked the song, merely listened to it twice before making his terminal conclusion. Although the song was written by Kelly, Jackson was adamant that the production should be a collaborative effort among the two musicians.[6] The record sent to him had no harmony or modulations, so Jackson added a choir in the concluding portion and added a sense of climax and structure to the final slice.[nine] The song is written in the key of B major. The song has a tempo of lx beats per minute, making it one of Jackson's slowest songs.[ten]
Plagiarism [edit]
In 1993, Edward and Daniel van Passel wrote the score to a song titled "If We Tin First All Over". Information technology was registered with the Belgian Lodge of Authors, Composers and Publishers (SABAM) that year. The score has never been commercially released, and can only exist establish as sheet music, which does non contain data near the timbre, rhythm or harmony.[11]
When "You lot Are Non Alone" became a worldwide success, the van Passel brothers approached SABAM proverb information technology was similar to their song. The internal committee noted similarities between the melodies and recommended pursuing a lawsuit against Kelly and Zomba Tape Belongings Holland BV. The brothers applied to the Court of Leuven for an injunction on Oct 18, 1995.[eleven] The Belgian Court rejected the claim of plagiarism on January 20, 2003, finding that the 43.46% similarity betwixt the two melodies was a coincidence. The van Passel brothers submitted an appeal.[11]
On September 4, 2007, the Courtroom of Appeal in Brussels reversed the 2003 ruling, based on the fact that Kelly'south primeval evidence of writing "Yous Are Noght Lonely" was August 1995, 21 months later the brothers had registered their score for "If We Tin Start All Over". The courtroom concluded that information technology was possible that Kelly had accessed the score and developed this into "You Are Not Alone". Kelly maintains that he never met or heard of the van Passel brothers. The courtroom also stated that the van Passel brothers "did not create their work merely in order to register information technology with SABAM and put it in a drawer, simply at to the lowest degree informed third parties of the existence of their limerick".[11]
Belgium maintains a ban on all radio and telly broadcasts of the "Y'all Are Not Solitary" song and music video. Vendors found with copies confront fines of €thou for each re-create of the song. The van Passel brothers have gained recognition every bit co-writers of the melody for "You Are Non Alone" in Kingdom of belgium.[11]
Critical reaction [edit]
'Yous Are Not Alone' received positive views from music critics. In more recent years, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic expressed the opinion that it was among some of the best songs Jackson ever released, calling the vocal seductive.[12] James Masterton said in his weekly Great britain chart commentary in Dotmusic, that it "probably ranks as i of the near beautiful songs Michael Jackson has ever recorded".[xiii] Pan-European magazine Music & Media wrote, "A far cry from Scream, Jackson undergoes a gigantic moodswing hither. Sad every bit he is, the vibrato in his vocals perfectly complements the moody carol".[xiv] A reviewer from Music Week rated it five out of v, calculation, "Barely a yelp or gulp to be had on this dead simple R Kelly-penned and produced ballad. Not the strongest slowie on the album simply a lot of wayward fans volition be hankering later on some no-frills old fashion Jackson. A biggie."[xv] The R&B critic and journalist Nelson George described the song every bit lovely and supple.[16] Jon Pareles of The New York Times said that it was the simply conventional love vocal on the new material on HIStory. He compared it to Mariah Carey'south song "Hero" and said information technology "sounds like a surefire hit".[4] James Hunter of Rolling Stone noted that, "the excellent current single 'Scream' or the kickoff-rate R&B ballad 'You Are Not Lonely' – manage to link the incidents of Jackson'southward recent past to universal concepts, like injustice or isolation. When he bases his music in the bluntness of hip-hop, Jackson sketches funky scenarios denouncing greed, coating unreliability and false accusation".[5]
Writer and journalist J. Randy Taraborrelli wrote of the song in 2004, "[it] remains among Michael's best songs ... On listening to 'Yous Are Not Alone', one wonders how many times Michael tried to tell himself, during his near drastic and anguished times, that he did accept support in his life, from a higher power, or even friends and family unit, whether he actually believed information technology or non".[17] Fred Shuster of the Daily News of Los Angeles described information technology as the all-time song on the anthology.[18] Conversely, while Steve Holsey of Michigan Relate gave the album a positive review, he described the vocal as the worst on the album, calling the Kelly penned lyrics "trite" and below the standard set by Jackson'south own lyrical skills.[19] Robert Christgau of Blender would later telephone call information technology "quietly yucky"[20] while pop music critic Bill Wyman of New York called it "drony and unpleasant."[21] "You Are Non Alone" received an American Music Award nomination and a Grammy nomination both for "Best Pop Vocal Performance".[22] [23]
Chart performance [edit]

It debuted at number ane with first week sales of 120,000 copies. The vocal was certified platinum past the RIAA and sold one million copies domestically.[25] [26] [27] It bankrupt the record set by his previous double A-side single "Scream" and "Childhood," which was the start vocal in the 37-year history of Billboard to debut at number five—where it peaked.[26] It peaked at number one in the UK after a debut at number iii in the prior week.[26] [28] The song also reached number one in Wallonia, France, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland. In Canada information technology peaked at number ii.[29] Information technology became a peak x hit in every major market.[26] [29]

Presley leans downwards towards her husband in the temple scene of the music video.
The music video was directed by Wayne Isham on July 12, 1995, and begins with a large number of paparazzi taking photographs of Jackson. The plot then centers around 2 locations: a temple where Jackson appears in an affectionate semi-nude scene with his then-wife, Lisa Marie Presley, and a theater where Jackson performs the vocal to an empty hall. Jackson too appears alone in other locations such as deserts and along tide pools. The slightly extended version that appeared on HIStory on Motion-picture show, Volume 2 was notable for scenes where special furnishings were used to give Jackson white, feathery, almost angelic wings. Several of these scenes included Jackson's side having been pierced by an arrow. The other version of the video is included on Number Ones and Michael Jackson's Vision. The temple scenes were a homage to Maxfield Parrish'south 1922 painting Daybreak.[30] The theater scenes were filmed at the Pantages Theatre, in Los Angeles.
